Supported platforms
Based on the info i read on the OpenXC site, it seems only android devices are supported. Is that correct?

OpenXC may be starting with Android devices. But according to the Rules, this Challenge will accept Submissions for any platform. The intention for celebrating "open data" from vehicles is that the data should be platform/technology agnostic.

Thanks for the reply Ian. Is the below link a service to the open data that has been made available? If not, where is the definitive site to obtain that?

The definitive Sample Vehicle Data (as referenced in the Rules document linked above) is available at energy.gov/developer. More specifically, here is the actual URL for the Sample Vehicle Data:
http://en.openei.org/community/files/driving.txt
We will update energy.gov/developer so that the connection is more clear. More broadly, we are seeking to leverage whatever data can be freely accessed from a vehicle's Onboard Diagnostics Port, or "OBD-II". (And we are curious to see what value can be achieved by mashing up OBD-II with other data, such as from smart phones.) The Sample Vehicle Data provided by Ford's OpenXC platform is one easy approach to start working with OBD-II outputs. But there are also many other avenues and the Judges will consider all of them.

Thanks again.
I plan to submit an idea that is not on the Android platform. i can presume that I'll have enough sample data from the OpenXC platform I can use to build my solution, right?

The Sample Vehicle Data is not intended to be comprehensive. It is merely a launch point. For example, additional open data was just posted by the Department of Transportation in this Discussion post:
http://appsforvehicles.challenge.gov/forum_topics/1771
The Rules document also includes OBD-II information field descriptors such as:
- Fuel level
- Fuel efficiency
- Odometer
- Distance covered since restart
- Condition based maintenance
And many others information streams.
Additional research, information gathering, and creativity may be required to collect the required data inputs for your product.
Note: ONLY Ideations or business plans are required for Phase 1 of the Challenge.
